1 Samuel 18-Godly Friendships and True Success

Read 1 Samuel 18:3
Today’s Truth

1 Samuel 18 highlights two key themes: the deep friendship between David and Jonathan and Saul’s jealousy toward David. Jonathan, Saul’s son, formed a strong bond with David, recognizing God’s anointing on him. Meanwhile, Saul became envious of David’s success and favor with the people.

Jonathan’s friendship with David was selfless—he supported David even though it meant he would not be king. In contrast, Saul’s jealousy consumed him, leading to anger and destruction. This chapter reminds us that true success comes from God, and godly friendships are a gift that strengthens us in our journey.

Discussion Questions
  • Do you have a friend who encourages you in your faith, like Jonathan did for David?
  • Have you ever struggled with jealousy? How can you surrender it to God?
  • How can you celebrate others’ successes instead of comparing yourself?
Application

Lessons from this passage:

Godly Friendships Are Selfless – Jonathan didn’t see David as a rival but as a friend to support. True friendships are built on love, not competition. (1 Samuel 18:3-4)

Jealousy Leads to Destruction – Saul’s jealousy of David blinded him to God’s plan and led to his downfall. Instead of resenting others’ success, we should celebrate how God is working in their lives. (1 Samuel 18:8-9)

Success Comes from God – David’s victories were not because of his strength but because God was with him. (1 Samuel 18:14)

Are you cultivating godly friendships like Jonathan? Or are you struggling with jealousy like Saul? Choose to support and celebrate others, trusting that God’s plan for you is good.
