1 Samuel 20

Read 1 Samuel 20:42
Today’s Truth

In 1 Samuel 20, we see a powerful example of loyalty, faithfulness, and godly friendship between David and Jonathan. Even though Jonathan was Saul’s son and the rightful heir to the throne, he knew that God had chosen David. Instead of being jealous or betraying David, Jonathan protected him, even at great personal cost.

Their covenant friendship was built on trust in God’s plan, not personal gain. Jonathan was willing to sacrifice his own future as king because he honored God’s will above everything else. This chapter teaches us the importance of godly friendships, faithfulness, and trusting God’s purpose even when it costs us something.

Discussion Questions
  • Do you have friendships that encourage your faith, like David and Jonathan’s?
  • Are you willing to trust God’s plan, even when it requires personal sacrifice?
  • How can you be a more faithful and supportive friend?
Application

Lessons from this passage:

True Friendship is Selfless – Jonathan put David’s well-being above his own position as king. Godly friendships are not about competition, but about lifting each other up. (1 Samuel 20:4)

Faithfulness to God Comes First – Jonathan loved his father but ultimately followed God’s will over family expectations. (1 Samuel 20:13-15)

Godly Covenants Last – Jonathan and David made a covenant before God, showing that true relationships are rooted in faith and commitment. (1 Samuel 20:16-17)

Are your friendships built on faith and trust in God? God calls us to be faithful friends, honest supporters, and selfless encouragers. Just as Jonathan and David honored their commitment before God, we are called to honor our relationships and trust God’s plan, even when it requires sacrifice.
