1 Samuel 3-Listening for God’s Voice

Read 1 Samuel 3:9
Today’s Truth

In 1 Samuel 3, we see young Samuel learning to recognize the voice of God. While serving under Eli in the temple, Samuel hears God calling his name, but he doesn’t yet understand who is speaking. With Eli’s guidance, Samuel responds with a simple yet powerful posture: “Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening.”

Samuel’s story reminds us that God still speaks today. He speaks through His Word, through the Holy Spirit, and sometimes through others. But just like Samuel, we must learn to recognize His voice and respond with obedience.

Discussion Questions
  • How do you make time to listen for God’s voice in your daily life?
  • Has there been a time when you felt God was speaking to you? How did you respond?
  • What is one step you can take today to grow in obedience to God’s leading?
Application

How can we develop a heart that listens to God?

Be still before Him — In a world filled with noise, we must make time for quiet reflection and prayer.

Seek guidance from spiritual mentors — Just as Eli helped Samuel, godly leaders can help us discern God’s voice.

Respond in obedience — When God speaks, our job is to listen and act in faith.

Samuel’s willingness to listen changed the course of his life and the future of Israel. When we cultivate a listening heart, God can guide us into His purposes.
