1 Samuel 5-God’s Power Over All

Read 1 Samuel 5:6
Today’s Truth

After capturing the Ark of the Covenant, the Philistines placed it in the temple of their god, Dagon. But something incredible happened; Dagon fell before the Ark, broken in pieces. Then, the Lord brought plagues upon the Philistines, showing them that no false god could stand against His power.

This chapter reminds us that God is sovereign over all—over nations, false idols, and even those who oppose Him. The Philistines thought possessing the Ark gave them control, but they quickly learned that God is not to be manipulated or contained.

Discussion Questions
  • Are there any areas in your life where you are trusting something more than God?
  • How can you acknowledge God’s authority in your daily decisions?
  • What does this chapter teach you about God’s power over all things?
Application

We can apply this lesson today by asking ourselves:

Are there “idols” in our lives? Anything we trust in more than God—success, money, comfort—will ultimately fail us.

Do we acknowledge God’s authority? Just like Dagon fell, everything in life must bow before Him.

Are we trying to control God? The Philistines treated the Ark like a trophy, but God is not a tool for our own plans—He is Lord of all.

Rather than resisting God’s power, we should submit to Him, worship Him, and trust that He alone reigns over all things.
