Blessings and Curses-Deuteronomy 28-29
Read Deuteronomy 29:29
Today’s Truth
In Moses’s third speech, he details the blessings and curses that Israel will experience depending on their faithfulness to the Lord. It was common in ancient covenant treaties for the curses to be longer than the blessings. Yet, this may also hint at Israel’s future failure to be faithful to the covenant.
Discussion Questions
- Faithfulness matters. How has God been faithful to you?
- God has always had a people. How does it feel knowing that you are part of God’s people?
- God punishes disobedience with the hope that we will turn back to him. How has God chastised you where you were willing to turn to him?
Application
Moses concludes his third speech with a final exhortation to Israel to accept this covenant from the Lord. Moses reminds Israel of the Lord’s past faithfulness to them as a plea for them to trust Him again as they enter the Promised Land. So must we be faithful to the Lord as we remember his faithfulness toward us.
