Jesus Came to Serve

Read John 13:3-5
Today’s Truth

Jesus washed smelly, dirty, calloused feet with His own holy hands. At this point, the disciples are prepared for Jesus to become the military and political leader of Israel. Jesus removed His clothing and acted like a slave. The one most deserving of position and title chose servant as His title and humility as His attitude. Jesus, the most important person in the room, began washing the disciples’ feet demonstrating that in God’s economy, greatness is shown through humility, service, and sacrifice. The one who will be honored in God’s kingdom is willing to lay down everything in order to honor God.

Discussion Questions
  • How would it have felt to be in that room with the disciples?
  • Does serving others come easily to you? Why or why not?
  • What’s one way you can serve someone today?
Application

If we’re honest, we all spend a good bit of time trying to make a name for ourselves rather than laying our name down for Jesus. Our desire to become great in other’s eyes is our stumbling block. What would happen if those who claim to follow Jesus actually followed His example by laying down our titles, positions, status, posturing, and influence to become servants of all?

Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.” The 11 men in that room turned the world upside down by laying it all down and becoming servants of all. What are we waiting on?
