In Joshua 22, the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh are released to return to their land east of the Jordan River after faithfully assisting in the conquest of Canaan. Before they leave, Joshua reminds them of the importance of remaining faithful to God. Later, a misunderstanding arises when these tribes build an altar near the Jordan. The rest of Israel fears they are rebelling against God, but the tribes explain that the altar is not for sacrifice but as a witness to their unity and shared faith in God.
This chapter teaches us the importance of unity among God’s people, careful communication, and wholehearted devotion to God. It reminds us that misunderstandings can arise even among believers, but they can be resolved when approached with humility and grace.
