Judges 3 – Deliverance Through Obedience
Read Judges 3:9
Today’s Truth
Judges 3 introduces us to the pattern of sin, oppression, repentance, and deliverance that repeats throughout the book. The Israelites forgot God and followed the sinful ways of the surrounding nations. As a result, God allowed them to experience hardship. But when they cried out to Him, He sent deliverers—judges like Othniel, Ehud, and Shamgar—to rescue them.
This cycle mirrors what can happen in our lives. When we stray from God, we often find ourselves facing struggles. But God, in His mercy, is always ready to rescue us when we turn back to Him.
Discussion Questions
- What instructions did Joshua give the people before crossing the Jordan (Joshua 3:5)? What does it mean to “consecrate yourself” before seeing God move in your life (Joshua 3:5)?
- Have you ever faced an obstacle that seemed impossible, like the Jordan River? How did God provide for you?
- How did God show His power and presence as the Israelites crossed the Jordan River (Joshua 3:13-17)? In what ways do you need to trust God’s timing and guidance in your life?
Application
- Spiritual Compromise Leads to Struggles – Just like Israel adopted the sinful ways of other nations; we must guard against the influence of the world pulling us away from God (Judges 3:5-7).
- God Hears Our Cries – Even when we fail, God is merciful. When we sincerely seek Him, He provides strength, guidance, and deliverance (Judges 3:9, 15).
- God Uses Unexpected People – Ehud, a left-handed man (uncommon for warriors), and Shamgar, who fought with an ox goad, remind us that God often works in ways we don’t expect (Judges 3:15, 31).
