Ruth 1- Trusting God in the Midst of Loss

Read Ruth 1:16
Today’s Truth

Life often brings unexpected hardships—loss, uncertainty, and difficult choices. Ruth 1 begins with a tragic story: Naomi, her husband, and two sons leave Bethlehem due to famine. In a foreign land, Naomi loses her husband and both sons, leaving her and her two daughters-in-law, Orpah and Ruth, as widows.

Naomi, broken and bitter, decides to return to Bethlehem, urging Orpah and Ruth to stay in Moab. Orpah chooses to remain, but Ruth clings to Naomi with one of the most powerful declarations of faith:

“Where you go, I will go; where you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God.” (Ruth 1:16)

Ruth’s commitment wasn’t just to Naomi—it was a step of faith in trusting Naomi’s God, even when the future was uncertain. Though Naomi saw only bitterness and loss, God was already at work setting the stage for redemption and restoration.

In our lives, we may face seasons of loss and uncertainty, but like Ruth, we can choose to trust in God, believing that He is writing a greater story than we can see.

Discussion Questions
  • Have you ever experienced a season of loss or uncertainty? How did it impact your faith?
  • What do you think motivated Ruth to leave everything behind and follow Naomi?
  • Naomi saw only bitterness, but God was preparing a blessing. How can you shift your perspective to trust in God’s greater plan?
Application

God is present even in our pain. Naomi felt abandoned, but God was still working behind the scenes.

Faith requires trust beyond what we can see. Ruth chose to follow God without knowing what the future held.

God uses difficult seasons to lead us into His greater plan. What seems like an ending is often the beginning of something new in God’s plan.
