The Consequences of Disobedience – Lessons from Joshua 7

Read Joshua 7:11
Today’s Truth

Joshua 7 recounts the tragic defeat of Israel at Ai after their miraculous victory at Jericho. This chapter is a sobering reminder that sin has consequences—not just for individuals but for the community of believers as well. Achan’s disobedience brought devastating results, highlighting the seriousness of sin and the necessity of repentance.

After their confidence from Jericho, the Israelites assumed Ai would be an easy victory. But their overconfidence and Achan’s hidden sin caused God to withdraw His blessing, leading to their defeat. This story teaches us about the dangers of sin, the need for accountability, and the path to restoration with God.

Discussion Questions
  • Are there areas in your life where you are trying to hide sin? How is that working for you?
  • Do you take sin as seriously as God does? Explain your answer.
  • Are you relying on your own strength, or are you seeking God’s presence and guidance in all areas of your life? Explain.
Application

Sin Cannot Be Hidden from God: Achan took some of the devoted things from Jericho, which God had clearly forbidden (Joshua 6:18-19). Though he hid them in his tent, God saw his sin and revealed it to Joshua.

The Effects of Sin Are Far-Reaching: Achan’s sin did not just affect him—it impacted the entire nation. Thirty-six men died in the battle, and the Israelites faced humiliation and fear. This illustrates the communal consequences of individual sin.

God Takes Sin Seriously: The severity of Achan’s punishment (he and his family were stoned and burned) may seem harsh, but it reflects the holiness of God and the seriousness of sin. Disobedience to God is not a small matter; it disrupts fellowship with Him and brings judgment.
