Trusting God’s Timing-1 Samuel 26

Read 1 Samuel 26:11a
Today’s Truth

In 1 Samuel 26, David once again has the opportunity to kill King Saul, who is unjustly pursuing him. Saul and his men are asleep, and David’s companion, Abishai, urges him to strike while he has the advantage. But David refuses.

David recognizes that God’s promises must come to pass in God’s way and in God’s time. Though he had already been anointed to be the next king, David chose the path of honor, restraint, and trust. He would not take shortcuts or try to “help God along” by taking matters into his own hands.

This chapter reminds us that faith means waiting on God—even when we have the opportunity to force an outcome ourselves. David’s self-control and deep reverence for God’s authority show us what it means to live with conviction and trust in the middle of tension.

Discussion Questions
  • Where in your life are you tempted to “take matters into your own hands” rather than waiting on God?
  • How does David’s respect for Saul, despite Saul’s unjust actions, challenge your view of authority and obedience?
  • What does it look like to trust God’s timing in a culture of instant gratification?
Application
  • Practice Restraint: When faced with opportunities to “get ahead” through compromise, pause. Ask: Is this honoring to God?
  • Wait in Worship: While you’re waiting for promises to be fulfilled, use the time to deepen your worship and trust.
  • Honor Even When It Hurts: Like David, choose to speak and act with integrity toward those who wrong you, knowing that God is your defender.

Wise voices—and a humble heart to listen—can save us from a lifetime of regret.
