A church open to go where God leads us and embrace different.
GracePlace Church has a long history beginning as the Duncanville Church of Christ on the fourth Sunday of February 1949 in the quaint downtown feed store. The preacher was Ira Bristow. As the church grew, it moved in 1954 to the corner of Center and Walnut. In 1963 the Duncanville church appointed its first shepherds: Roy Britt, I.T. Cawthon, Woodrow Gleeson, and Earl Foster. In April of 1987 as more young families moved into Duncanville, the church moved again to 402 W. Danieldale Rd where the families helped in building the building there. The church started making a name for itself in the community through it's food pantry, No Sale, recovery programs, prison ministries, ESL and Back to School Giveaway.
As all cities do, Duncanville's community began to change. As some churches were dying and others moving, the church leaders at Duncanville Church of Christ through prayer, made a deliberate decision to embrace the change and differences. On May 30, 2017 the church name was officially changed to GracePlace Church of Christ due to being recognized by the community as that "grace place" where anyone is accepted and welcomed.
In 2016, the church was again facing discerning where God is leading and change. After much prayer by elders and the congregation, in November 2017 the property and facility at 402 W. Danieldale Rd was sold to Village Tech Charter School. The last assembly at the property was December 31, 2017. This decision was a marker of the church's faith in God, as the church decided to sale before even having a new home to relocate to. And so the church set out on a journey of faith, waiting for God to show what's next.
During this time of transition, other churches, Ducanville First Baptist and Duncanville Arise Church, opened their facilities to GracePlace Church. This was a beautiful symbol of unity in Jesus. On April 15, 2018 GracePlace Church hosted its first assembly at its new location on 520 Big Stone Gap Rd where we offer different worship expressions and embrace diversity all under one church believing in one God who sent Jesus to save us. And though our name and building may be different from 1949, our mission remains the same: To KNOW God, GROW in Faith, and GO Serve Others & Share Jesus Christ.
