Introduction to Genesis

Read Genesis 1:26
Today’s Truth

The theme of Genesis is creation, sin, and re-creation. God made the world very good, but first cursed it and then destroyed it in the flood because of man’s disobedience. The new world after the flood was also spoiled by human sin (Chapter 11.) God chose Abraham for a special purpose. Through his family, all nations would be blessed (Chapter 12:1-3.) God’s purpose will eventually be fulfilled through Abraham’s descendants (Chapter 49.)

Discussion Questions
  1. Watch the Bible Project’s Intro to Genesis1-11. What is your reaction?

  2. What kind of God is depicted in Genesis?
  3. After God creates, what does Moses keep saying that God saw about creation? What does that tell you about God’s original design for this world?
Application

It’s easy to get lost in the genealogies and accounts in Genesis without seeing the big picture. Keep God, not just the people, in mind as you read through the book. Consider His character qualities. If you were an Israelite just released from slavery and reading this for the first time, would you marvel at God’s power over creation? Or His anger over sin? Or the way He fulfilled His promises to everyone? Awareness of each of these characteristics should evoke worship . . . and hope. Remember that the Lord is strong, faithful, and just. And His desire to bless His creation will one day be fully realized.
