Passage: Luke 1:26-38
Summary
The Apostles’ Creed doesn’t begin with ethics; it begins with events. Not “I believe in the teachings of Jesus,” but “I believe in Jesus Christ…conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary.” Why? Because before Jesus ever preached a sermon, healed a disease, or died on a cross, God was already telling us something about who He is and why He came.
Sermon Questions
- Why is it important that the Creed emphasizes both “conceived by the Holy Spirit” and “born of the Virgin Mary”? What does each phrase protect about who Jesus is?
- How does Mary’s story challenge modern assumptions about control, autonomy, and personal plans?
- Mary is “greatly troubled” yet remains faithful (Luke 1:29–30). What does this teach us about faith in moments of fear or confusion?
- In what ways does Mary model surrender without fully understanding the outcome?
- Where might God be calling you to trust His power rather than rely on your own plans or abilities? How does the truth that God enters broken situations with grace give hope to people who feel overlooked or disqualified?
