Passage: Joshua

Summary

Moses has died and the mantle of leadership has fallen to Joshua. Joshua is tasked with leading Israel into the Promised Land, and his first major challenge is Jericho, the most fortified city in the world. This scene here in Joshua 5 takes place on the eve of that battle. Joshua experiences a “theophany,” or an Old Testament, pre-nativity appearance of God in human form. This is Jesus.

Sermon Questions
  1. What would you do if you experienced Jesus as Joshua did? How would you respond?
  2. Jesus is the Commander of the Universe. He’s not someone to get on your side; he’s someone to whom you surrender. Respond to that statement.
  3. Ask your self and answer these questions...What has the Holy Spirit given me to do?” What gifts has he given to me? What is he leading me to do with them?
  4. Respond to this statement… God is looking for people through whom he can do the impossible. What a pity we plan only the things we can do by ourselves.
  5. A surrendered church becomes a beacon of hope, a refuge for the broken, and a vessel for God’s glory. In what areas of life do you need to surrender?
